No Public Process

In June 2004 the BC Liberals announced plans to expand the #1 Highway without any prior public consultations. Since this announcement, there have been no opportunities for the public to learn more about the government�s plans.

Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon has rejected calls for public input stating, "There's no need for more studies." Premier Gordon Campbell is already asking Ottawa for highway funding, despite having no public mandate to move ahead on the project.

Municipal opposition

The mayors of Vancouver and Burnaby have criticized the provincial government's handling of this project. The Greater Vancouver Regional District has asked for an assessment of alternatives given that the plan goes against the Livable Region Strategic Plan.

Meanwhile, citizens are left with no voice in the official proceedings.
