Highway Update - 19 April

Hello Concerned Citizens -

Please find below a summary of our latest events and plans for opposing the #1 Highway Expansion.  The headlines are at the top of the e-mail, with details below.  There are 7 points in this update.

1.  **Let Them Have Shrubs! (previously known as Traffic Jam).  Come join us on Saturday, April 30, 1-4pm at Grandview Park (Charles and Commercial).  We've changed the name and location based on advice from Minister of Transportation, Kevin Falcon...see below for details.  We'll need lots of Volunteers!**

2.  **The Writ is dropped!  Tuesday April 19th is the 'official' start of the campaign leading up to the May 17th Provincial election.  Visit our website (http://cche.vcn.bc.ca/cche.vcn.bc.ca/provelection) for information on where parties and candidates stand on this issue and for the dates and locations of all-candidates meetings.  Updates will be made frequently, and please let us know of any candidate position or all-candidate's debate we haven't listed.**

3.  **Roads are for Hockey!  The second period of this popular street-reclaiming road hockey game takes place this coming Sunday (April 24th) on Commercial Drive at Charles Street starting at 1pm.  Visit the website of Cross Pedestrians http://www.dotank.org/crosspedestrians/ for more information.**

4.  **Saturday afternoon activists.  Cross-walk action along 1st Ave and pamphleting at 1st and Commercial.  Want to expand this to your street or neighbourhood?...let us know.  We have signs ready for you to borrow!**

___________
1.  "Let Them Have Shrubs!"  (http://cche.vcn.bc.ca/shrubbery2) Saturday April 30th, 1-4pm at Grandview Park (Charles and Commercial).  Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon has told East Vancouver residents that he will mitigate the effects of increased traffic through our neighbourhood - increased pollution, noise, and decreased safety - by planting shrubs!  We find this 'solution' laughable.  "Let them have shrubs" is a family-oriented event that is geared at educating our neighbours about the #1 Highway Expansion.  There will be fun activities for kids and adults alike as well as speakers and opportunities to learn more about the #1 Highway Expansion issue.  So many people are still unaware that this plan is in the works leading up to the provincial election!

3.  Bring Yer Stick!  Come to play hockey at 1 p.m. on Sunday, 24 April and help spread the word about the #1 Highway Expansion.  Cross Pedestrians (www.dotank.org/crosspedestrians) is organizing this event as a follow-up to the successful first period in February.  The score after the first period: Pedestrians 1 - Cars 0!

4.  Every Saturday between now and the election, come join us along First Avenue for some Cross-Walk Action!  Meet at Susan and Don's place (1710 Victoria Drive at First Ave) at about 12:30 to pick up signs and organize teams, and then fan out to pedestrian-controlled intersections along 1st Avenue.  All you have to do is carry a banner (they read "Stop #1 Highway Expansion", "Look at Options" and "Listen to Citizens") and walk back and forth across an intersection.  We have had incredibly positive feedback - lots of happy honks and waves, many questions and conversations.  Many of our neighbours are still completely unaware of this issue, so we need all the help we can get in spreading the word!  Photos are up on the website from the first cross-walk action.  Come out and join us!  Pamphleting followed at 1st and Commercial between 2-4pm, also with good response!  More volunteers needed to keep the energy up.  Write to us at stophighways@telus.net to volunteer.

5.  Regularly scheduled organizers meeting - Wednesday April 20.  All are welcome!  1710 Victoria Drive (at 1st Ave); meeting starts at 7pm. The focus of this meeting will be on sharing updates, planning for the 'Let Them Have Shrubs' event and deciding on next steps, including planning for beyond the provincial election on 17 May.

6.  Rafe Mair interviewed Burnaby mayor Derek Corrigan and Citizens Concerned with Highway Expansion spokesperson Dave Fields on Monday 18 May.  Today, there will be a follow-up interview with Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon.  Listen in if you have the chance.
